Key Facts
- The United States has three facilities to dispose of low-level waste from nuclear power plants and medical and industrial facilities. Beginning July 1, one of these facilities—in Barnwell, S.C.—will accept waste only from Connecticut, New Jersey and South Carolina.
- In light of this reduction in disposal capacity, the nuclear energy industry has taken measures to assure continued safe and secure management of low-level waste.
- In addition to implementing processes to reduce the volume of low-level waste, the industry has undertaken a coordinated effort to develop and implement guidelines for on-site storage that will allow sufficient time for development of new disposal options.
